Crossroads: The coming-of-age musical drama starring Ralph Macchio, Joe Seneca, and Jami Gertz, became instantly popular among members of the blues community, due to its semi-fictional Robert Johnson story line connection, and tons of killer music performed by artists including Arlen Roth, Ry Cooder, Steve Vai and Sonny Terry.
In case you are wondering if Ralph Macchio actually played the guitar in the movie - the short answer is "yes", in some parts. Director Walter Hill had hired guitarist Arlen Roth as a musical consultant and to teach Macchio to play, sort of. Roth visited Macchio's home, four days a week for months teaching the young actor blues techniques, including finger-picking and slide. Although Ralph was set on actually playing in the film, Roth, Cooder and Hill knew that would be impossible, but Roth tutored Macchio well enough for him to fake the parts on screen.
After 36 years, Crossroads has stood the test of time. The Robert Johnson story, the legends of Willie Brown and Lightnin' Boy and the incredible soundtrack make this a film that will surely be watched over and over again.
But before we get to the main feature let's enjoy...
The Pre-Show:
Then, we'll have the opportunity to explore three interesting visual and audio documents all related to our main figure: Robert Johnson. The first one in question: "Monkey Business" is true in its conclusion and the second part portrays the devil at the crossroads as a woman for the first time!! Our second document is an interesting look through one of the many youtubers out there, where he theorises the exact location of The Crossroads (maybe he's right - your decision). It is followed by a great worldwide interpretation of a Robert Johnson classic: "Walking Blues". To end our first part of the evening, before heading straight into the main feature, we'll enjoy a great documentary concerning Robert Johnson: Devil At The Crossroads (2019).
